People ask Mr. Buntrock why he picked the name Makai, meaning “towards the sea”. As a native of Hawaii, he has always been drawn to water and the ocean in particular. He started swimming competitively at 8 years old, was certified as a NAUI diver at 16, join the Naval Reserves at 17, got his Naval ROTC scholarship at 18, and went off to the University of Michigan to get his degree, BS Engineering in Oceanography. He then served 7 years in the USN, where he was a Naval Diving & Salvage Officer, serving his last tour in Portsmouth England at the Admiralty Experimental Diving Unit, under the Personnel Exchange Program. Upon leaving the Navy, he went to work for Oceaneering International, the world’s largest commercial diving company and later joined CalDive International, to be General Manager of Southeast Asia, living in Singapore. His love of the ocean meant his leisure time was spent body surfing, diving, sailing, water skiing, and photographing it all.
